The Pavilion of the King of Teng was build in the Tang dynasty (618-907) by Li Yuanying, the son of emperor Gaozu (r. 618-626) who later was bestowed the title of King of Teng. It is located in the modern town of Nanchang in Jiangxi province on the city gate beside the river. Famous banquets were held in this pavilion and a famous “Preface of the Pavilion of the King of Teng” (Tengwang Ge xu) composed. It was rebuilt several times, in the Ming and Qing dynasties and finally in 1989.
Wen Zhengming was the leading figure of literati painting in the Ming dynasty and was also famous for his calligraphy. The blue and green landscape style, as well as the fine, meticulous drawing of the architecture and the ships in this painting are characteristic for him.
